A Rare & Important Mahantongo Chest (SOLD)

Attributed to William Otto, this is one of three related pieces each bearing an inscription, this chest having been made for John Kesler who was the nephew of Otto’s wife.


Dimensions: H 23", W 51", D 22 1/4"
Date / Circa: Dated "16th of June 1814"
Maker / Origin: Attributed to William Otto, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania
Medium: Pine retaining the original polychrome decorated finish.
Miscellaneous: Inscribed for the recipient: "John Kesler born 16th of June 1814 in Lower Mahantango Township, Schuylkill County" (English Version). For two related pieces see Reed, Decorated Furniture of the Mahantongo Valley, plate 8 (previously owned by us) and fig. 13. Formerly in the collection of George Horace Lorimer and sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries October 1944.
