depicting a bird with a fanciful comb and a berry in its beak. Inscribed on reverse "George W. McDonald is a fine little Boy to Learn"

Part of a small group of fraktur by this unidentified artist and to our knowledge, the only known award of merit.

According to Ancestry.com, George W. McDonald was born July 1843 in Hampshire County, West Virginia, the son of Evan and Sarah McDonald.  Evan was the son of Benjamin and Margaret McDonald and the brother of Elizabeth McDonald (b. 1806), all of which are documented by existing fraktur by this unknown artist.
