Various weathervane manufactures advertised exotic “dolphins” and sea monsters in their catalogues. Another dolphin is in the collection of the Shelburne Museum.

Date / Circa: c. 1880
Maker / Origin: Maker unknown, American
Medium: Molded copper with an exceptional weathered surface of verdigris with remains of the original gilded finish over yellow sizing.
Miscellaneous: The rod would have ended in a copper ball, which has been absent for many years. A period ball has been added for display. Excellent overall condition and a rare form. Literature: Lavitt, Animals in American Folk Art, p. 24.
