Old label on the reverse reads “Portrait of Dr. Wm. F. Houston Painted by M. Quay, a friend & companion of Robert Burns to Martha Houston Greene niece of Wm. F. H. to Cornelia B. Greene Wild her daughter”. William Frederick Houston (1787-1838) received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1809. He practiced medicine in Columbia, Lancaster County, kept a drug store and published a newspaper. In 1826 he abandoned his practice and entered the ministry.
