Attributed to Magdalena Briner Eby (1832-1915), Perry County, Pennsylvania
Circa 1890
Hooked cotton rags on burlap. Mounted for display.
L. 115", W. 45"
This is perhaps the largest known rug made by Magdalena Briner Eby. Her rugs have charmed the attention of folk art collectors for many years as well as advanced rug hookers. The positioning and naive depiction of the animals and flowers she chose to hook have an appealing abstractness elevating the art form.
See: Rug Hooked Traditions with Magdalena Briner Eby by Evelyn Lawrence and Kathy Wright for the life story and documentation of her rugs.
