appliqued and pieced cotton quilt

This quilt was one of 15,000 entries to the Sears National Quilt Contest held to celebrate the 1933 Chicago's World Fair. The theme, "A Century of Progress," was chosen to commemorate Chicago's 100th anniversary, and offered a glimpse of a happier time in the not-too-distant future for a country still mired in the Great Depression. Quilters produced examples in traditional patterns, as well as unique designs based on the theme, featuring historical events, inventions, and world's fair buildings.
