“Lion and Palm” Hooked Rug (SOLD)

Tear Sheet

American, the patterned burlap designed and marketed by Ebenezer Frost of Toledo, Ohio. Rug hooked unidentified.

C. 1886-1900

Wool and cotton rag on burlap

31 x 60 1/2" mounted for hanging

These pattern rugs attributed to Ebenezer Ross of Toledo, Ohio were mail order pieces through a catalogue. The purchaser would choose a pattern which was then stamped on a piece of burlap and the buyers would hook the rugs choosing their own colors of wool and cotton rag. There are many examples of similar rugs in the "Lion and Palm" pattern but no two are ever identical. The condition and unusual color color palette make this a superlative example of a Ross rug.
